Weight and yield calculations
When using Aerolite Scoria aggregates:
1 MT of typical Aerolite aggregate equals 1.32 cubic meters in volume,
Or I cubic meter of scoria aggregate
weighs 0.74 tons.
I MT of typical Aerolite fines products equal 1.02 cubic meters in volume
Or 1 cubic meter of scoria fines weighs 0.99 MT
(By comparison for normal dense weight aggregates
I ton of material equals 0.67 cubic meters or 1 cubic meter equals 1.6 tons.
While the fines weight around 1.8 MT per cubic meter)
Note: Scoria is a mineral that is quarried only in extinct volcanoes in the southern Victorian area. It is composed of a complex range of different compounds and minerals with a structure that is highly vesicular. It this looks like a rock sponge. The lightest and best of this material is mined in the Anakie area to the south west of Melbourne at two quarries owned by the Aerolite group.
Use of Aggregates for concrete
As a result, normal dense weight aggregates used in normal concrete have a density of around 1650kgs/m3 and produces concrete that weighs 2,500 kgs/m3.
Aerolite material has about half the density of normal basaltic aggregates and produces a concrete that has a finished air-dry density as low as 1600 kg/m3
Use of Aggregates for bulk coverage
To fill a 1 cubic meter hole you only need 0.76 MT of Aerolite's light weight scoria aggregate. To fill the same volume in normal aggregate will take 1.5 MT. This means that if the material has the same bulk price you would require only just over half the weight of scoria as against normal aggregates. Half the material is required, this means a saving of almost 50% in cost
Use of Aerolite Fines products
To fill a 1 cubic meter hole you only need 0.96 MT of Aerolite's light weight scoria fines. To fill the same volume in normal aggregate will take 1.8 MT. This means that if the material has the same bulk price you would require just half the weight of scoria as against normal aggregates. A saving of almost 40% in cost
